Everyone knows the major apps for editing photos on the go; Apple Photos, Lightroom, SnapSeed, and many more but not many people know the best apps to edit video. No one wants to spend their time downloading dozens of apps just to delete them so we have done the dirty work for you! We have compiled a list of the best apps we have found for quickly editing video on your iPhone or iPad so all you have to do is download and enjoy!
Apple Photos
First, let’s start off with the app you don’t have to download, Apple Photos. This is the built-in Photos app on your iPhone where your photos and videos are stored. I have found through testing that if you just need to tweak your video clips a bit this is a great app to do it with. You get all of the normal editing adjustments that you would expect (exposure, highlights, color correction, etc.) and if you don’t push the edit too much you can actually get some nice results! One of the major drawbacks of using the Apple Photos app is that you can cut clips together to mack an edited movie but that is where the next few apps come in!
Adobe Premiere Rush for Video
Adobe Premiere Rush is a great app for editing video especially if you are familiar with Adobe Premiere Pro. You don’t have to be an experienced editor to pull together clips into a nice short film. Unlike using the stock Photos app on the iPhone, in this app, you can actually make movies with a multitrack timeline, add music and sound effects, customized titles, transitions, and color correction tools. This app also makes it really easy to share your final project and with the built-in ability to sync to your Adobe Creative Cloud account, you can start editing your movie on your phone and finish it up on the desktop Adobe Premiere Rush app if desired. You can even export your project to Adobe Premiere Pro for more advanced edits.
iMovie
iMovie has been around for a long time on the desktop and when it was released for the iPhone it was a pretty big deal. In the mobile app of iMovie you can do a lot to your clips that you can do in the desktop version (combine clips, add titles, cut and trim clips, and create fun trailers) but there is one thing that it is missing that programs like Adobe Premiere Rush can do and that is exposure adjustments. All of those tweaks are made via presets that are built-in to the app. Even if you want to just bump up the exposure just a bit, you can’t do that in the app. You would actually have to adjust that setting in the Photos app then import the clips into iMovie. This isn’t terrible but can get annoying. iMovie is great for super quick edits with minimal changes but if you want to dive a little deeper, I would choose a different app.
LumaFusion
The past apps we discussed are considered a “consumer-friendly” app and are designed to make editing easy and quick for the end-user. LumaFusion is not one fo those apps. This isn’t to say it is hard to use but it is an extremely powerful app with a decently heavy price tag ($29.99 USD currently). But what do you get for that price? You basically get a more powerful and feature-rich app that, if you have the knowledge and time to learn, can really take your videos to a new level. One feature that I really love is the ability to import and use LUTs on the go (you might have guessed this is my favorite feature) but they so many other features that the others don’t to give you a mobile video editing suite that can be comparable to a desktop app.
